The Aio 88 Temple Pilgrimage is a historic route located primarily in the Aio area of Yamaguchi City and the neighboring Aio Futajima area. The sacred sites date back to 1783 (Tenmei 3), when Shokai Hoin, the eighth head priest of Henmyoin Temple, completed the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. He carefully brought back amulets and sacred soil from each of the sites, enshrined them across Aio, and established them as the Aio Sacred Sites. It is said to be the oldest replication of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage in Japan.
